How to Give a Crowd-Rocking Speech That’s Worth Paying for

As an entrepreneur, one of the best ways to spread your brand is through public speaking. And if you get good enough, event coordinators will pay up to $20K for a 45-minute speech.

Professional speakers are entertainers first, and educators second. Before you can get paid to speak, you need to know how to lure in an audience and keep them hanging on your every word.

I’m not a paid speaker so I asked Ej Carrion, a 21-year-old professional speaker, to give you his 5-step process for giving a crowd-rocking speech.

1. Be Yourself

The majority of people hate public speaking, so it’s important to know that people understand how you feel when you’re on stage. The audience can relate with being nervous.

In fact, if you were extremely confident on stage, you’ll lose the humanization of your presentation. Just be yourself. The more comfortable and transparent you are with the crowd, the stronger the connection you’ll make.

Before you go on stage, think about the person you are when no one is watching. You’re probably goofier, sillier, and more enthusiastic when people aren’t around. If you’re able to stay true to your character, you’ll be amazed at how supportive the audience will become.

2. Start with a Creative Introduction

When you’re giving a presentation, start with a creative way to captivate your audience.

When constructing an introduction for your presentation, you want to change the audience’s attention pattern. You want to surprise them or do something they wouldn’t expect.

For example, start from the back of the room and tell a story, make a joke, or ask an interesting question. The quicker you disrupt the flow of the room, the easier it’ll be to keep their attention.

The more creative or funnier you are, the easier it will be to win over the crowd. When you do something different or comical the audience will think, “this is gonna be good.”

3. Keep Your Message Simple

Most speakers think that because they have 30 to 45 minutes to speak that they have to load their audience with tons of information.

It’s hard for them to stay focused. They’re not going to remember your “21 step system to financial freedom”. You’ll be lucky if half of the audience remembers your company’s name and what problem it solves.

In order to increase the audience’s retention, keep your message simple and relate it back to the problem your company solves. Then throughout your presentation support it with stories, testimonials, and examples.

4. Get the Audience Engaged

The key to a successful presentation is getting the audience engaged right away. Ask questions and get volunteers throughout your presentation. This strategy will turn your presentation into a two-way communication street that the audience will enjoy.

When you get the audience to nod their head, scream “yes!” or volunteer; the higher your chances are get them involved in your business. Create incentives by giving prizes and bonuses for those who participate and volunteer.

Have you ever been to a sporting event? Do you remember how crazy people get when they have a chance to win an over-sized t-shirt?

That’s the same energy and environment you need to build around your free gifts and prizes. Also, it gives you another chance to pitch your product without coming across as a pushy salesperson.

5. Execute a Memorable Closing

The most important part of your presentation is to close with a call-to-action.

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for where you ask your audience to buy your product, join your online community, or sign up for your mailing list.

Just like your introduction, your closing has to be creative and different. Leave your audience inspired and motivated. Maybe read a poem, tell an edgy story, or give a one-time only discount for those who listened to your presentation.

The close should focus on connecting to your audience’s emotions because people buy based off of emotion. Once they decide to take action, they’ll justify it later with the facts you presented during your presentation.


When I was talking with Ej he told me that this is how he breaks down his 45-minute presentation:

  • First 15 minutes – Jokes to engage the audience.
  • Next 10 minutes – A personal story to connect with the audience.
  • Next 10 minutes – A simple message that he wants them to remember.
  • Next 5 minutes – Tying in the message with the story and his jokes.
  • Last 5 minutes – Providing the call-to-action and having the audience thank the event coordinator for bringing him in.

Professional speaking is fun and it helps you build your business. Even if you’re not getting paid as a speaker, event coordinators will give you a table to sell your products after the speech.

Think of public speaking as a chance to clearly explain to your target audience exactly how you can solve their problem.

I read the steps and I was impress. I will be giving my first speech on August 23, 2011 and I want it to be a success. I am extremely nervous but I have to step outside my box and do this.
